All about Burgundy wine

The major wine regions of Burgundy

The Burgundy vineyard stretches over more than 230 km, from northern Chablis down to the southern Mâconnais. It is divided into several emblematic areas: Chablis for its fresh whites, the Côte de Nuits for its great aging reds, the Côte de Beaune for complex whites and silky reds, the Côte Chalonnaise for its excellent value for money, and finally the Mâconnais, land of generous whites. This mosaic of climates and soils makes Burgundy one of the greatest wine terroirs in the world.

The role of natural wine in Burgundy

Long perceived as a very classic and rigid region, Burgundy has recently seen a surge of interest around natural wine. More and more winemakers are stepping off the beaten path to offer cuvées without additives, with indigenous yeasts, often unfiltered. This renewal sometimes clashes with traditions but allows rediscovering Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in freer, lively, and vibrant expressions. Natural Burgundy remains demanding but is winning more and more enthusiasts seeking emotions.

The red wines of Burgundy

The natural red wines of Burgundy mainly come from Pinot Noir, a delicate grape variety expressing all the finesse of the terroirs. In natural style, these reds gain fruitiness, energy, and drinkability while maintaining complexity. Depending on their origin, they can be light and floral (Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais) or deeper and more structured (Côte de Nuits). Sulfur-free vinifications, sometimes with whole clusters, reveal a more spontaneous and less woody expression of Pinot Noir, perfect for lovers of lively red wine.

The white wines of Burgundy

Chardonnay is the king of Burgundy. In natural style, it frees itself from heavy élevages to let the mineral tension, freshness, and purity of the fruit speak. In Chablis or the Hautes-Côtes, you find straight, saline, almost crystalline whites. In Côte de Beaune or the Mâconnais, Chardonnay takes on a broader, rounder, sometimes buttery expression. Work without sulfur or filtration gives Burgundy white wine a more direct expression, sometimes slightly oxidative, which can surprise but fascinates with its personality.

What to pair with a natural wine from Burgundy?

The natural reds of Burgundy, soft and fruity, pair perfectly with roasted meats (poultry, free-range pork), vegetarian dishes with mushrooms, or soft cheeses. The whites, depending on their tension or roundness, enhance grilled fish, creamy poultry dishes, or even exotic dishes with ginger or lemongrass. Natural cuvées, often more digestible, open the field to pairings with lighter and more modern dishes.

What are the best natural wine cellars in Burgundy?

Burgundy is rich in natural wine talents. Among them, Maison Valette in the Mâconnais stands out as a benchmark with whites of rare depth, made without compromise. The domaine favors long élevages, often sulfur-free, to reveal the very essence of the terroir. For reds, Jérôme Galeyrand from the Côte de Nuits offers cuvées that are both accessible and precise in natural vinification. Their rigorous work in the vineyard and cellar shows that Burgundy and natural wine can go hand in hand.
