All About Alsace Wines
The Alsatian Terroir
The Alsatian vineyard is located at the foot of the Vosges Mountains, in the departments of Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin, stretching over 120 km. Thanks to the protection of the Vosges mountain range, the region receives little rainfall and enjoys plenty of sunshine. The vineyard boasts 51 Grands Crus that highlight specific sites, while for A.O.C Alsace wines, the grape variety is often highlighted on the label. However, many young winemakers now aim to emphasize the terroir by practicing field blending (complantation).
The Grape Varieties of Alsace Wines
There are many white grape varieties (riesling, sylvaner, chasselas, pinot blanc, auxerrois, muscat blanc à petits grains, muscat rosé à petits grains, muscat ottonel, chardonnay, klevener de Heiligenstein), as well as Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Generally, Alsace wines are single-varietal. Only "Edelzwicker" is a blend of white grapes. You’ll find dry white wines, semi-sweet (Late Harvest), and sweet (Noble Rot). The diversity of soils and grape varieties allows for the production of distinctive and diverse terroir wines.
