All You Need to Know About the Fleurie Appellation
What is the Fleurie Appellation?
Fleurie is one of the most iconic crus of the Beaujolais. Located between Morgon and Chiroubles, it spans nearly 900 hectares, mainly on crumbly pink granite soils that give the wines their unique finesse. The appellation is protected by the Avenas and Durbize ridges, and reaches its highest point at La Madone, over 425 meters in altitude. This high-altitude terroir, combined with excellent exposure, produces delicate, elegant and aromatic Gamay wines.
Fleurie is composed of 10 main lieux-dits, each offering unique nuances depending on elevation, soil depth or granite density. The climate is slightly cooler, allowing for slow and balanced ripening — ideal for subtle wines with fine tannins and pronounced floral expression.
What food pairs with a Fleurie?
Fleurie wines are known for their freshness and aromatic finesse, making them great companions for delicate dishes. In their youth, their floral and fruity notes pair perfectly with grilled vegetables, roast poultry, or a mushroom quiche.
With more structure (depending on the terroir), they also pair beautifully with duck breast, pink veal chop or even pan-fried river fish such as herb-seasoned trout. Serve slightly chilled to reveal their full vibrancy — ideal for summer or vegetarian cuisine.
What are the best Fleurie wines?
The Fleurie appellation is home to some of the most inspiring natural winemakers in Beaujolais. The Famille Dutraive estate is a true reference, with fine, vibrant and honest cuvées, crafted without additives.
Guy Breton is another standout — his Fleurie wines combine crisp fruit, smooth structure and mineral freshness, perfect to explore the appellation’s full richness. In a bold, energetic style, the cuvées of Yann Bertrand (Les Bertrand) showcase the vitality of Fleurie's best granite terroirs — luminous, intensely aromatic and always full of emotion.
