Morgon, Beaujolais Wine

Morgon du Beaujolais naturel, bio et biodynamique

How could anyone overlook the Morgon appellation in the Beaujolais region? Dominated by the famous Mont du Py, Morgon is built on six lieux-dits and, like the Chénas appellation, enjoys plenty of sunshine. And how could we not mention the great Guy Breton to explore Morgon wines—fruit, power, and the perfect balance. In a different style but worth discovering, try the Gamay wines by Manuel Girard. The hardest part? Choosing!

All about the Morgon appellation

What is the Morgon appellation?

Morgon is one of the ten cru appellations of Beaujolais, and one of the most iconic—alongside Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent. Located around the village of Villié-Morgon, this AOC lies on soils rich in schist and decomposed rock known as “roches pourries,” giving the wines structure and aging potential. The only permitted grape variety is Gamay noir à jus blanc, which here expresses itself with intensity, juiciness, and depth.

Morgon is often described as the most “Burgundian” of the Beaujolais crus, producing wines that age beautifully. The renowned Mont du Py hill, the beating heart of the appellation, yields cuvées of remarkable depth and complexity, especially when vinified naturally or biodynamically.

What food pairs well with Morgon?

Thanks to its structure and generosity, Morgon lends itself to a wide range of food pairings. In its fruitier expressions, it’s perfect with roast chicken, grilled pork ribs, or a plate of fine charcuterie. With some bottle age, it pairs well with heartier dishes like beef stew, braised pork cheeks, or mild spiced vegetarian tagines.

Its juicy texture and subtle spice also make it a great match for Asian dishes like lacquered duck or stir-fried noodles with mushrooms. Morgon is a convivial, food-friendly wine that shines with honest, generous cooking.

Top Morgon producers?

Among the must-know producers of Morgon is Guy Breton, a key figure in natural wine, whose cuvées are balanced, fruity, energetic, and full of finesse. Similarly essential is the Marcel Lapierre estate, a legendary name: their Morgons are deep, rich, and always delicious—whether in classic form or sans sulfites.

These domaines are part of the famous "Gang of Four", a group of winemakers who revolutionized Beaujolais in the 1980s by returning to more natural, terroir-driven winemaking. Today, they inspire a new generation of young growers in Morgon, like Manuel Girard, who crafts fresh, precise, fruit-forward Gamays. These are soulful wines—approachable yet profound.
