The story of Jean-Louis Dutraive

Welcome to Fleurie, where Jean Dutraive settled in 1969 in one of the appellation's oldest estates, Domaine de la Grand'Cour. His son Jean-Louis Dutraive joined him in 1977 and has run the estate since 1989. He is considered one of the pioneers of natural wine in Beaujolais, alongside Marcel Lapierre.
The estate has just over 9 hectares in Fleurie, on the Chapelle des Bois, Grand'Cour and Champagne lieux-dits, plus nearly 2 hectares in Brouilly, at Vuril in the village of Charentay.
Here, soils and grapes are respected: traditional farming, hand harvesting, no chemical fertilisers or weedkillers. In the cellar, grapes are neither destemmed nor crushed, yeasts are native, carbonic macerations are done at low temperature and Jean-Louis adds no sulphur. What all the cuvées share? Finesse.
His children Ophélie, Lucas and Justin have joined the estate. After the hailstorms of 2016 and 2017 wiped out the whole harvest, the family also launched négoce cuvées from organic grapes, with the same philosophy: intervene as little as possible for fine, elegant wines.

The cuvées of Domaine de la Grand'Cour

In Fleurie, Chapelle des Bois comes from a plot in the south of the appellation, between 250 and 300 m, on sand and granite: a burst of fruit, suppleness, the signature of a very fine Fleurie. The Clos de la Grand'Cour, the family's monopole at 300 m, aged half in barrels and half in large casks, is the estate's emblematic cuvée. The Champagne lieu-dit completes the Fleuries, as does Les Déduits, from grapes bought from Marc Delienne, an ultra-juicy mouthful of fruit.
In Brouilly, the Brouilly Vieilles Vignes, from vines averaging 60 years on south-facing clay-limestone, is smooth with supple tannins.
The Dutraive family's cuvées widen the range: the Beaujolais-Villages Lantignié, pure Gamay juice, Cap sur le Blanc, a 100% Beaujolais Chardonnay full of tension and finesse, Cap Ô Sud, a 100% Cinsault between power and fruit, and the Vin de France La Part des Grives.
