The wines of Baptiste Bertrand
The story of Baptiste Bertrand
Baptiste Bertrand is one of those winemakers bringing a breath of fresh air to Beaujolais. His vines are in the upper reaches of the appellation, around Marchampt and Quincié-en-Beaujolais, areas cooler than the regional average. The soils are very varied: granite, which gamay loves so much, but also, in places, rocks of volcanic origin. Baptiste works these terroirs with a natural approach, from vine to cellar. His wines are made without inputs and without filtration, with fermentations and cold macerations of a few days, to bring out the fruit and keep plenty of freshness, even in the sunniest vintages. The result: tasty, juicy, tangy Beaujolais-Villages, real thirst-quenchers that remind us why gamay is one of natural wine lovers' favourite grapes.
The cuvées of Baptiste Bertrand
Baptiste makes his wines by terroir, so that each cuvée tells the story of its corner of Beaujolais. Marchampt comes from the heights of the village of the same name, on partly volcanic terroirs. Gamay shows a fresher, tangier profile than average there, and a cold maceration of a few days makes it a bright, tasty, juicy little wine: the thirst-quencher par excellence. Sermezy, for its part, comes from gamay planted in the village of Quincié, on a granite terroir. Cold fermentation brings out the fruit, even in a hot year: the wine stays extremely digestible, fruity and wonderfully gourmand. Two natural Beaujolais-Villages, without inputs or filtration, to serve slightly chilled with a charcuterie board or a hearty bistro dish.
