The Wines of Jérôme Galeyrand
A Starred Winemaker in Burgundy
Goodbye Mayenne, hello Burgundy. A life choice made 25 years ago. A choice rewarded after years of hard work and discipline: in 2020, Jérôme Galeyrand received a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
He has mastered the Burgundian terroir with incredible precision and purity, and epi-curieux is fortunate to offer you these wines – or rather… these great wines!
The Story of Jérôme Galeyrand
Born in Mayenne, more precisely in Craon, Jérôme Galeyrand was not initially destined to produce great Burgundy wines. With parents in commerce, he first followed the same path. In 1994, he left his native land and moved to Burgundy, the land of winemakers.
It was in Beaune that he did his first harvest. The path was set, a passion was born for the great wines of Burgundy, and Jérôme thrived in this world. In 2001, he joined the viticulture school of Beaune to train.
Since 2002, Jérôme Galeyrand has been one of those passionate winemakers who started out on their own. There was no inheritance – just the true desire to craft his own wine, with the utmost respect for the environment.
Today, Jérôme owns more than 5 hectares of vineyards across the Côte de Nuits, including Marsannay, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côtes de Nuits Villages, and Burgundy red and white.
The Vineyards of Burgundy
Privileged to work on these Burgundian lands, fully aware of the exceptional terroir he cultivates, Jérôme Galeyrand manages his vines with respect for the environment. He is based in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the village of Saint-Philibert.
His first parcels came through leasing or sharecropping. Jérôme works all of them with the same vision: “An authentic wine is a healthy wine, and for it to be true to its terroir, the soil must be alive.”
It was only natural for him to move towards organic and biodynamic farming. In 2019, he was certified organic. No additives are used in the vineyard or in winemaking. Industrial yeasts are banned, fermentations are done without sulfur, no fining, no enzymes – only a minimal dose of sulfur before bottling to stabilize the wine… Jérôme imposes this discipline and quality of work on himself to produce exceptional wines where finesse reigns, aiming for incredible precision, unmatched purity, and to reveal the terroir. Today, he cultivates over 5 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits. A great fan of Aligoté, he also sources grapes from like-minded growers, notably in the Côte Chalonnaise and Bouzeron.
The soils are plowed, harvests are done by hand. If treatments are needed, they are natural (herbal teas, copper, sulfur), just as vinification remains natural. Jérôme guides his wines to bring out the best of the terroir.
The Cuvées of Domaine Jérôme Galeyrand
The Jérôme Galeyrand estate offers around ten cuvées across its terroirs.
Epi-curieux is fortunate to share some of them with you. Burgundy lovers, beware: the finesse and purity of these wines will make you fall even more in love with the region!
Among them is Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice, where Pinot Noir is elevated with finesse. This Burgundy red was gently macerated and aged for over a year in barrels. Aromas we love, which will only get better with time…
Also, the Gevrey-Chambertin En Billard, a “climat” that delivers more character, depth, and generosity – Jérôme’s favorite style of Gevrey-Chambertin. A wine built to age!
Another terroir perfectly mastered by Jérôme: Fixin Champs de Vosger 2020. Power and elegance – a winning duo for this Pinot Noir. His flagship cuvée: Côte de Nuits Villages Les Retraits 2020. A wine of great class – elegance, fruit, depth. Pinot Noir enthusiasts, rejoice!
Marsannay Combe du Pré 2020 brings another terroir expression of Pinot Noir. At the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, this cuvée bursts with fruit and freshness. Jérôme could not ignore Burgundy’s great whites. With the same mastery as his Pinots, he crafted Bourgogne Chardonnay Orane 2020. Direct pressing, barrel fermentation, and one year of oak aging for this cuvée, a tribute to his daughter (who may well join him one day!).
A big fan of Aligoté, he also makes Bourgogne Aligoté Le Cran 2020. Sharp freshness, perfectly controlled aging – a complete success for this white wine from Burgundy.
