A starred winegrower in Burgundy
Goodbye Mayenne, hello Burgundy. A lifestyle choice made 25 years ago. A choice rewarded after all these years of work and rigor, in 2020, Jérôme Galeyrand receives a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
He knew how to tame this Burgundy soil with incredible precision and purity, and epi-curieux is lucky enough to be able to offer you these juices, sorry… these great juices!
The story of Jérôme Galeyrand
A native of Mayenne, more precisely of Craon, Jérôme Galeyrand was not destined to produce great Burgundy wines. His parents being in the business, he decides to take the same direction. In 1994, he left his native lands and went into exile in Burgundy, the land of winegrowers.
It was in Beaune that he carried out his first harvest. The march is taken, the passion sets in for the great wines of Burgundy, Jérôme Galeyrand enjoys this environment, so he will go to the school of viticulture in Beaune in 2001 to get better.
Jérôme Galeyrand has therefore been one of these passionate winegrowers since 2002, who started on their own. There is no heritage, there is just a real attachment to making one's own wine, with the utmost respect for the environment.
Today, Jérôme has more than 5 hectares of vines spread over the Côte de Nuits; in Marsannay, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côtes de Nuits Villages and red and white Burgundy.
The Burgundy wine-growing lands
Lucky to work on these lands of Burgundy, aware of the exceptional soil he cultivates, Jérôme Galeyrand cultivates his vines with respect for the environment. He is therefore installed in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the village of Saint-Philibert.
He obtained his first plots through tenant farming or sharecropping. Jérôme Galeyrand works on all his plots with a single and same perspective “an authentic wine is a healthy wine, and for it to be faithful to its soil, the land must be alive”.
It is therefore naturally that he embarks on the organic and biodynamic farming of his land. In 2019, he received organic farming certification. There is no input to the vine as in winemaking. Industrial yeasts are banned, vinification is done without sulfur, there is no fining, no enzymes either, only a minimum dose of sulfur just before bottling to stabilize the wine... Jérôme Galeyrand imposes this rigor and quality of work because he wants to make wines where finesse prevails, he wants a result with incredible precision, an inimitable purity of his wines and reveal a soil. Today, he cultivates just over 5 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Côtes de Nuits. Also a great lover of Aligoté, Jérôme Galeyrand gets his supplies from winegrowers who work in the same spirit as him and who come from the Côte Chalonnaise and Bouzeron in particular.
The soils are plowed, the harvest is carried out manually. If there are treatments to be done in the vineyard, they are natural (herbal teas, copper, sulfur), just like the vinification which remains natural. Jérôme Galeyrand accompanies his wines to extract the best from the soil.
The wines of the Jérôme Galeyrand estate
The Jérôme Galeyrand estate offers around ten bottles across all of his soils.
Epi-curieux has the chance to offer you some wines from the estate. Fan of Burgundy do not abstain, the finesse and purity of these wines will make you fall even more in love with the region!
Jérôme Galeyrand cultivates several soils in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. So there is the Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice 2020 bottle, a soil where the Pinot Noir is magnified, with finesse. This red Burgundy wine benefited from a gentle maceration, before aging for more than a year in barrels. Aromas as we like, but which will be even better in many years...
There is also the Gevrey-Chambertin En Billard 2020, a climate that offers more character, more depth, delicacy; what Jérôme Galeyrand prefers in the Gevrey-Chambertin. A wine for laying down!
Another soil perfectly mastered by Jérôme, the Fixin Champs de Vosger 2020. Power and elegance, the winning duo of this Pinot Noir bottle. The main bottle of the Burgundy winemaker, the Côte de Nuits Villages Les Retraits 2020. Very classy wine, elegance, fruit, depth. Burgundy Pinot Noir lover, enjoy!
Marsannay Combe du Pré 2020, another soil for a new expression of Pinot Noir. In the north of the Côte de Nuits, this bottle expresses itself with fruit and freshness. Jérôme Galeyrand could not miss the great white wines of Burgundy. With as much mastery as on the Pinots Noirs, he offers the Burgundy Chardonnay Orane 2020 bottle. Direct pressing, fermentation in Burgundy-style barrels, and aging in oak barrels for a year for this bottle in a nod to his daughter (who could surely join her father one day!).
A great lover of Aligoté, it is with pleasure that he makes this bottle of Bourgogne Aligoté Le Cran 2020. Sharp freshness, with controlled ageing, 100% success for this white Burgundy wine.
To discover without further delay, or to know how to be patient for the bottles to keep...
