The wines of Jérôme Galeyrand
A starred winegrower in Burgundy
Goodbye Mayenne, hello Burgundy: a life choice made over 25 years ago and rewarded after years of hard, rigorous work, when Jérôme Galeyrand received a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France in 2020.
He has tamed the Burgundian terroir with incredible precision and purity, and Epi-curieux is lucky to offer you these juices, sorry… these great wines!
The story of Jérôme Galeyrand
Born in Craon, in Mayenne, Jérôme Galeyrand was not destined to make great Burgundy wines. His parents were in business, and he first followed the same path. In 1994 he left his homeland for Burgundy, the land of winegrowers.
He did his first harvest in Beaune. Passion for great Burgundy took hold, and in 2001 he enrolled at the Beaune wine school to train.
Since 2002, Jérôme has been one of those passionate winegrowers who started from scratch: no inheritance, just the desire to make his own wine with total respect for the environment.
Today he farms more than 5 hectares in the Côte de Nuits: Marsannay, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits-Villages and red and white Bourgogne.
The vineyards of the Côte de Nuits
Aware of the exceptional terroir he farms, Jérôme Galeyrand works his vines with respect for the environment. He is based in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the village of Saint-Philibert.
He obtained his first plots through tenant farming or sharecropping, and works them all with the same conviction: "an authentic wine is a healthy wine, and to be true to its terroir, the soil must be alive".
Naturally, he turned to organic and biodynamic farming, with organic certification in 2019. No additives in the vineyard or the cellar: no industrial yeasts, no fining, no enzymes, sulphur-free fermentations and only a minimal dose before bottling to stabilise the wine. This rigour lets him make outstanding wines of inimitable finesse and purity that reveal their terroir. He grows just over 5 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits. A great Aligoté lover, he also sources grapes from like-minded growers, notably in the Côte Chalonnaise and Bouzeron.
The soils are ploughed and the harvest is done by hand. Vineyard treatments are natural (herbal teas, copper, sulphur), as is the winemaking: Jérôme guides his wines to bring out the best of the terroir.
The cuvées of Jérôme Galeyrand
The estate makes around ten cuvées from its terroirs, and Epi-curieux is lucky to offer you several of them. Burgundy fans, don't hold back: the finesse and purity of these wines will make you fall even more in love with the region!
In Gevrey-Chambertin, La Justice shows Pinot Noir at its finest: gentle maceration, over a year in barrels, and aromas that will be even better in many years' time… En Billard offers more character, depth and juiciness, Jérôme's favourite Gevrey: a wine for ageing par excellence!
Another perfectly mastered terroir, the Fixin Champs de Vosger combines power and elegance, with a more concentrated, spicy Pinot Noir. The estate's flagship, the Côte de Nuits-Villages Les Retraits, is a wine of great class: elegance, fruit and depth. Burgundy Pinot Noir lovers, enjoy!
In the north of the Côte de Nuits, the Marsannays Combe du Pré and Est-Ouest give a light, fruity, fresh and elegant Pinot Noir. The Bourgogne Pinot Noir Antonin completes the reds.
Jérôme couldn't pass up Burgundy's great whites. With as much skill as for his Pinot Noirs, he makes the Bourgogne Chardonnay Orane: direct pressing, Burgundian-style barrel fermentation and a year in oak, a cuvée named after his daughter.
A great Aligoté lover, he makes several versions: Le Cran, with razor-sharp freshness, Chaumont, a gastronomic Aligoté that rivals great Chardonnay, and Blanche, lively and perfect as an aperitif. 100% success for these Burgundy white wines!
Enjoy now, or be patient with the wines for ageing…
