“It's better to taste this wine today; it's a fruit day, unlike tomorrow, which is a leaf day.” Have you ever heard such phrases when opening a bottle of natural wine?
This indicates that the winemaker already works their vines and wines biodynamically, following the lunar calendar, and that it can also have an impact on tasting.
It's important to understand that the lunar calendar is primarily a philosophy, a vision of vineyard work, a mindset of winemakers.
What is the lunar calendar?
The lunar calendar is used in wine production because certain phases of the moon are believed to affect the growth and ripening of grapes. Some people also believe that the moon's position relative to the Earth can influence the amount of water in the grapes and affect the quality of the wine produced. The lunar calendar remains a controversial topic in the wine industry and is often considered a matter of superstition rather than science.
The different days of the wine lunar calendar
At Epicurieux, we offer this lunar calendar to help you navigate the year for your tastings.
• Flower Day - These days are favorable for flowering and floral notes during tasting.
• Fruit Day - These are the days favorable for fruit development on the vine and the best days for tasting.
• Leaf Day - Leaf days are favorable for the aerial part of the vine and bring out more vegetal notes, a bitter side during tasting.
• Root Day - These days are favorable for soil work, and wines are rather closed for tasting.
• Perigee and lunar nodes - These days are not recommended for working the vine and tasting wine.

The lunar calendar, a philosophy
Winemakers who use the lunar calendar to work their vines are therefore practicing biodynamic agriculture.
As a reminder, biodynamics is a wine production method that is based on the principles of organic farming and adds a spiritual dimension. It considers the vine and vineyard as a living, interconnected organism, aiming to promote harmony between natural forces and farming practices. Biodynamics uses practices such as plant-based treatments, crop rotation, the moon, and the stars to influence growth cycles and vine treatments. It also uses unique biodynamic preparations, such as composts enriched with herbs and other organic materials to improve soil and vine quality. Natural winemakers who use biodynamics are convinced that nature offers the best expression for their wines. They are simply spokespersons for the terroir. Biodynamics is a true approach. Purists and other natural wine enthusiasts also use the lunar calendar for tasting. This means that they will open bottles depending on the day, and this will impact the tasting of the wine. Wines opened on a fruit day will have more fruity aromas, while those opened on a root day might have a bit more bitterness, a slightly more austere side. It’s up to everyone to believe in this value and enjoy wine as they see fit.
