The wines of Domaine Les Bertrand

Yann Bertrand, Annick and Guy

Wine is often a family affair, passed down from generation to generation. But the story of the Bertrand family is a particularly lovely one, and their red wines from the Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages, Fleurie, Morgon, Saint-Amour and Juliénas appellations are simply delicious.

Working the vines at Les Bertrand

More than a family story, Les Bertrand is a story of passion and conviction (not to be confused with Domaine Bertrand). It all began in the 1950s in the village of Charentay, in Beaujolais, when Louis Bertrand settled there. A born merchant, Louis quickly built his reputation in the region. Together with his wife Renée and their son Guy, he soon wanted to make more of this exceptional terroir. A few years later they took over Château de Grand Pré in Fleurie, giving the estate a new lease of life.
In 1992 Annick, Guy's wife, joined the adventure, and that same year they bought a few plots next to the château.
This growth came with a new awareness for Guy and Annick. They chose a sustainable approach and acted with respect for the environment: no more pesticides or weedkillers in the vineyard and, in the cellar, they let their wines express themselves as naturally as possible.
In 2012 the estate was certified organic. A great year for the family: Yann, Annick and Guy's son, joined the estate that same year. Yann quickly brought a new energy, exactly what his parents had hoped for. Doing things differently, doing them better? For Yann, it is not one person's work but a team effort. So he renamed the estate, and "Les Bertrand" was born.

Natural wine, the Yann Bertrand way

A true breath of fresh air and a purist at heart, Yann pushed the estate further towards sustainable farming. Biodynamics was introduced on 1.5 of the estate's 9 hectares. In the vineyard as in the cellar, Yann works like an artist, and it soon showed. Les Bertrand pay great attention to soil life in order to grow healthy grapes that express their terroir and vintage. A living wine you can taste in their Gamay with its strong personality.
They introduced "gobelet" (bush vine) pruning, a gentle pruning that respects the flow of sap. Everything is done according to the needs of the soil, and naturally (with preparation "500"). They alternate ploughing with controlled natural grass cover. A fully biodynamic approach that revitalises the plant life and creates a genuine natural protection for the vines.

Winemaking at Les Bertrand

In the cellar, Les Bertrand are as attentive as in the vineyard. Yann respects what his land gives him. Harvesting is done gently, by hand, with strict sorting. Nothing is added during vinification: Yann lets his wine express itself while following it closely. Ageing at Les Bertrand reflects their whole philosophy: all in delicacy. What matters to Yann is to make vibrant wines, balanced, fresh and long.

The cuvées of Les Bertrand

To get started, Oh! is the ultimate easy-drinking Beaujolais, a burst of red fruit, and P'tit Bouchon is Yann's primeur, fruity and zesty. On the granite slopes above the village, the Beaujolais-Lantignié has everything of a cru. Then come the crus: Juliénas 100, Saint-Amour Les Bambins, and the Morgons Iron, spicier on its iron-rich soil, and Dynamite, supple and airy on the border with Fleurie. Fleurie remains the heart of the estate with Coup d'Foudre and its nearly century-old vines, the Cuvée du Chaos grown around the family home, Phénix on granite slopes, Coup d'Folie and Mon Petit Chéri. Not forgetting Oh là là, made for sharing with friends.
