The wines of Domaine Bertrand

Talent and humility in the service of Beaujolais

The 15 hectares of Domaine Bertrand stretch across a good half of Beaujolais, over 7 appellations: a lovely diversity of terroirs for its red and white wines. Julien Bertrand, the third generation, now runs the estate, from Charentay to Juliénas via Fleurie, Brouilly and Moulin-à-Vent. Meticulous, pragmatic and thoughtful, Julien makes straight, precise wines, sometimes completely sulphur-free, where the terroir shines.

The story of Domaine Bertrand

On the Brouilly hill in Charentay, Domaine Bertrand has been a family estate since 1956. Since then the family has bought plots to reach 15 hectares. Passed down through the generations, the estate was taken over in 2014 by Julien Bertrand, the third generation.
The vineyard covers seven appellations: Beaujolais-Villages, Beaujolais Blanc, Régnié, Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas and Moulin-à-Vent, with 0.5 to 3 hectares each. Enough to travel across much of Beaujolais! Rigorous work, a family of enthusiasts: you can taste it in their wines.
Julien champions two great grapes: Gamay, the king of Beaujolais, and Chardonnay, both cherished for generations on the estate.
True to his values, Julien chose a very naturalist approach: studying soils and winemaking, then restructuring part of the vineyard in 2017 and converting to organic farming. Since 2020 the estate has been certified organic, proof of its commitment to the environment and to its vines.

The wine terroirs of Beaujolais

Across its 7 appellations, Domaine Bertrand farms in an eco-responsible way: healthy soils for pure wines! Julien chose grass cover to improve soil structure and protect it from climate change.
Harvesting is done by hand to preserve the quality of the bunches. Rigorous work that takes patience and precision: caring for the soil, protecting it and harvesting carefully are essential steps for a great wine. Julien is also committed to 100% natural: no additives, no pesticides, no synthetic products.
Having plots in different appellations is a real asset: sandy granite, limestone and clay-limestone each bring their own character to the wines, under a temperate climate with oceanic and Mediterranean influences.

The wines of Domaine Bertrand

The wines are made and aged in concrete, stainless steel or oak depending on style and appellation, with ageing of 6 to 24 months.
Soif ! is a 100% Gamay from Brouilly, born from a partnership between HC restaurant and Julien Bertrand: a thirst-quenching, light and fruity wine for friends, pure crunchy fruit!
Beaujolais Blanc shows all the potential of Beaujolais for fruity, juicy, serious Chardonnay: body and freshness, roundness and finesse, with a touch of complexity. The estate also makes a Bourgogne Blanc.
Beaujolais Nouveau is the estate's Gamay primeur, with redcurrant and blackcurrant notes and plenty of juiciness. Doubts about Beaujolais Nouveau? Make peace with it thanks to Julien Bertrand's! Also available in magnum.
Juliénas Les Fouillouses is a sunny red from a cru known for more concentrated Gamay: a lovely, deep, food-friendly Juliénas with years ahead of it!
Fleurie Nova is an elegant Fleurie with the complexity and freshness of granite soils.
Infini is a "Burgundian-style" Moulin-à-Vent aged 24 months in oak, while Les Petits Bois, another Moulin-à-Vent, is supple and fine, a Gamay that rivals some Burgundian Pinot Noirs.
In Brouilly, Pisse Vieille comes from the first plots the family bought in 1956: a generous, intense wine full of juiciness. Also discover the Brouilly Vuril.
