The wines of Domaine Breton
Catherine and Pierre Breton, a family heritage
Since the 1890s, the estate has relied on family winemaking know-how handed down from generation to generation. Based in Restigné, in the Bourgueil appellation, in the Loire Valley, Catherine and Pierre Breton, both children of winegrowers, took over the family vines in 1989 and quickly turned to natural, organic and biodynamic wines.
Since 1990 they have developed methods to reach a true balance between soils and plants, taking into account the influence of the moon and stars. Harvesting is done by hand, and the family firmly opposes technological, standardised wines.
Natural wine pioneers
In 1994 Pierre made his first sulphur-free bottling with the cuvée “Nuits d’Ivresse”. In 1999 Catherine launched La Dive Bouteille, a natural wine fair that then gathered about forty growers and now welcomes more than 200 from France and beyond. In 2002 Catherine released her first Vouvray, then the couple opened a wine shop on the île d’Yeu, La Dilettante. In 2016 their son Paul joined the adventure, and in 2018 they opened La Cuverie in Restigné, a guesthouse among the vines devoted to wine and music.
The cuvées of Catherine and Pierre Breton
Their philosophy: living wines, 100% grape, often with no added sulphites, light and fruity, made from Cabernet Franc, Chenin and Grolleau.
Nuits d’Ivresse, a Bourgueil, is made, aged and bottled without sulphur to preserve all the grape’s gourmandise. Also available in magnum.
Avis de Vin Fort is a light, fruity red Bourgueil, best served as chilled as a white: ideal for long sunny days.
Pierres Rousses, Paul’s Vouvray cuvée, is a mouth-watering Chenin expressing all the minerality of the Vouvray terroirs.
For big tables, the estate also offers its wines in bag-in-box, such as Trinch ! in Bourgueil or Le Chenin in Vouvray.
