Nicolas Réau

A former professional pianist, Nicolas Réau brings the same finesse and elegance to his natural wines. In 2002 he created Le Clos des Treilles in Anjou, where he quickly switched to organic farming (certified in 2012). His natural winemaking produces very fine Cabernet Francs and beautifully precise Loire Chenins. Today a maestro of wine, Nicolas Réau needs no introduction, nor do his generous, authentic wines.

The story of Nicolas Réau

Destined for a career as a pianist, Nicolas Réau became a maestro of natural wine. He swapped his love of music for a love of wine and trained in viticulture and oenology near Bordeaux in 1994. He then returned home and grew Cabernet Franc in Chinon for a few years.
In 2002, after losing his Chinon vines, he settled in Anjou, at Sainte-Radegonde, and took over Le Clos des Treilles: 7 hectares of vines on living soils surrounded by greenery. Meeting natural winegrowers and discovering the importance of soils transformed his work: he went organic in 2005 (certified in 2012) and cut sulphur to a minimum, down to completely sulphur-free reds. Today he even helps other Loire winegrowers make clean, sulphur-free wines.
His soils mix limestone, pink schist, quartz, sand and silt. He grows Chenin and Folle Blanche for their liveliness, and Cabernet Franc for the reds. Hand harvesting, plots split into separate cuvées, native yeasts and sometimes long ageing in barrels, concrete tanks or conical vats give his wines their depth and intensity.

The cuvées of Le Clos des Treilles

Almost all of Nicolas Réau's wines are AOC Anjou. Folle Blanche showcases a grape that is rare in the Loire Valley: a very fresh, light white with marked citrus notes. Victoire is a 100% Chenin macerated for three weeks and aged in barrels with no added sulphur, rich and fresh at once. Also from Chenin are Attention Chenin Méchant and the Anjou blanc.
Among the reds, Enlèvement Demandé is an ultra-juicy Cabernet Franc, made with no additives and aged a year in concrete: emotions guaranteed! L'Enfant Terrible is a Cabernet Franc of great complexity, deep, fine and elegant, with black fruit and a touch of spice. A great wine. Also discover Pompois and En Bordée.
