This means that the winemaker is already working biodynamically, i.e. with the lunar calendar, and this also means that he can have an impact on the tasting.
It is important to know that the lunar calendar is above all a philosophy, a vision of the work of the vine, a state of mind of the winegrowers.

What is the lunar calendar?

The lunar calendar is used in wine production because it is believed that certain phases of the moon can affect the growth and ripening of grapes. Some people also believe that the position of the moon relative to the Earth can influence the amount of water in the grapes and affect the quality of the wine produced. The lunar calendar remains a controversial topic in the wine industry and is often considered a matter of superstition rather than science.

The different days of the lunar wine calendar

At Epicurieux, we offer you this lunar calendar to help you find your way around the year, for your tastings.

• Flower Day - These days are favorable for flowering and floral notes during tasting.
• Fruit Day - These are THE days favorable to the development of fruit in the vineyard, and the best days for tasting.
•Leaves Day - The leaves day are favorable to the aerial part of the vine, and on more vegetal notes, a bitter side during the tasting.
• Roots Day - The days are favorable for working the soil, and the wines rather closed for tasting.
• Perigee and lunar nodes - These days are not recommended for working the vines and tasting the wine.

The lunar calendar, a philosophy

Winegrowers who use the lunar calendar to work their vines are therefore in biodynamic farming.
As a reminder, biodynamics is a wine production method that is based on the principles of organic farming and adds a spiritual dimension. It considers the vine and the vineyard as a living and interconnected organism, and aims to promote a harmony between natural forces and farming practices. Biodynamics uses practices such as herbal treatments, crop rotation, the moon and stars to influence the growth cycles and treatments of vines. She also uses unique biodynamic preparations, such as composts enriched with herbs and other organic materials to improve the quality of the soil and the vines. The natural winegrowers who use biodynamics are convinced that nature offers the best expression for their wines. They are only local spokespersons. Biodynamics is a real approach. Purists and other natural wine lovers also use the lunar calendar to taste. That being said, they will open the bottles depending on the day, and this will have an impact on the tasting of the wine. Wines opened on a fruit day will be more on the fruity aromas, whereas if it is opened on a root day, this can give the wine a little more bitterness, a little more austere side. Everyone is free to believe in this value, everyone is free to taste the wine as they see fit.
