The wines of Tanca els Ulls
The story of Tanca els Ulls
Celler Tanca els Ulls is based in Nulles, in the province of Tarragona, in Catalonia. Its name means “close your eyes” in Catalan, an invitation to taste without preconceptions, guided by your senses. Here the vines grow beneath almond trees, not far from the Mediterranean, and some of the grapes also come from the great terroirs of the nearby Penedès. The sun is generous, but altitude and the influence of the sea bring incredible freshness to the grapes. That is the estate's whole challenge: making sun-drenched wines that stay light, digestible and delicate. The grapes are Catalan, garnacha for reds, xarel·lo for whites, worked with as little intervention as possible. In the cellar, the wines are made without inputs, without added sulphites and without filtration. Sincere Catalan natural wines that make you forget the clichés about heavy, powerful Spanish wines.
The cuvées of Tanca els Ulls
Garnatxa Negra is a chance to rediscover grenache in a light style, focused on fruit and freshness. Altitude and the Mediterranean give a wine as digestible as it is delicate, far from the heady grenaches people often imagine. Served slightly chilled at aperitif time, it goes down effortlessly. Cartoixa de Vinyes Velles is an old-vine xarel·lo from the great terroirs of the Penedès. All the particularity of the grape and the place comes through in the bottle: fresh, tangy, slightly smoky and extremely saline. A mouthwatering white, unfiltered and without inputs, perfect with seafood, grilled fish or Mediterranean cooking. Two cuvées showing that Catalonia can offer natural wines of great finesse.
