Natural wine, organic wine and biodynamic wine
Do not mix, a natural wine is organic, but an organic wine is not necessarily natural.
Here are the differences between these three denominations:
- An organic wine , which has the Organic Label (AB), must respect very precise specifications. In the vineyard, the winegrower does not have the right to use pesticides or herbicides. No chemical input is authorized apart from a minimal dose of sulfur and copper. During the winemaking process, inputs are limited compared to conventional, but unnatural modifications are still possible.
- A biodynamic wine is a wine that involves, in addition to organic farming methods, more natural methods such as herbal preparations. Winegrowers using biodynamics consider their land as a living system and also take into account the whole lunar, astrological aspect. This is why the use of the lunar calendar in all preparations, interventions on wine, is very important.
- A natural wine, on the other hand, includes organic farming methods and/or biodynamic farming methods. During vinification, the winemaker must be as little interventionist as possible. Here, we are using the most natural and traditional method possible, for a result that is as close as possible to the soil and the grapes.
