The wines of Microbio Wines
Ismael Gozalo, the free spirit of Verdejo
Behind Microbio Wines is Ismael Gozalo, a leading figure of Spanish natural wine. Based in Nieva, in the province of Segovia, he works at the foot of the Castilian Meseta, a windswept high plateau with harsh winters and scorching summers.
Here, the king is called Verdejo. Ismael farms very old vines planted on sandy soils that protected part of the vineyard from phylloxera. Some are still ungrafted: a real treasure.
A “microbiological” approach to wine
The name says it all: for Ismael, wine is above all a matter of living things. The vines are farmed without synthetic products, fermentations rely on native yeasts and the wines are bottled with no added sulphites.
He also brings old practices back into fashion, such as long ageing or ageing under flor, to reveal the full depth of Verdejo. Highly successful natural wines that go off the beaten track.
The cuvées of Microbio Wines
La Banda del Argílico shows Verdejo in a fresh, chiselled, saline style: a white that does you good.
Sin Nombre lives up to its name, so hard is it to describe: nearly two years of ageing, between barrel and stainless steel, for a white of incredible complexity.
Evolución is a true UFO: a Verdejo aged around ten years under flor, a nod to tradition. Pair it with an aged Comté and a little pata negra.
On the red side, Sietejuntos Syrah plays the infusion card: a light wine, yet spicy and peppery. Ruf y Ann showcases Rufete, a native grape of Castile and León, in a concentrated, spicy but very balanced style.
We have also been lucky enough to offer Fragil, La Resistencia and the Cuvée Microbio. Wines not to be missed!
