Domaine de Montaillant

Alexis Hudon, winegrower in the Côtes de la Charité

Domaine de Montaillant is the project of Alexis Hudon, based in the Côtes de la Charité IGP, in the Nièvre, on the edge of the Loire Valley. Here, the vines grow on Jurassic clay-limestone soils, close cousins of those in neighbouring Burgundy. No wonder Chardonnay and Pinot Noir feel so at home.
The vines are farmed organically. No synthetic products: Alexis looks after his vines with herbal teas and plant-based preparations, and lets nature do much of the work.

Winemaking without artifice

In the cellar, the same philosophy: natural fermentations, no additives and wines with no added sulphites. The result? Wines with a striking personality, at the crossroads of the Loire and Burgundy, that always keep plenty of freshness and drinkability.
Alongside his own vines, Alexis also makes a few cuvées under his own name from bought-in grapes, a chance to have fun with other grape varieties.

The cuvées of Domaine de Montaillant

Two cuvées sum up the estate’s style perfectly.
Les Abeilles is Pinot Noir made like an infusion: a light, fruity, cheeky red with hints of a Jura Poulsard. The ideal aperitif red, with a charcuterie board.
Montaillant is the estate’s Chardonnay, where Burgundy meets the Loire. Aged in barrel on its lees, it combines the minerality of a cool terroir with real complexity: a great white for the table, worth decanting.
Over the years, Alexis has also given us Ça Claque, a Gros Manseng bursting with energy, and Le Groslot, a fresh, thirst-quenching litre of Grolleau and Colombard.
