The Wines of Château Lafitte
The History of Château Lafitte
Located in Monein, in the heart of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Château Lafitte represents a unique agricultural model within the wine landscape of the South West. This family estate, established in a former 14th-century manor house, has been nurtured for several decades by the Arraou family. Today, Antoine Arraou continues and deepens this approach by transforming the estate into a self-sustaining ecosystem, certified in organic agriculture and biodynamics (Demeter). On its 5 hectares of vineyards, he integrates vines with sheep, cereals, fruit trees, and bees. This agricultural diversity is not merely decorative: it helps recreate a living balance, nourishes the soil, reduces interventions, and embeds the estate within a sustainable, peasant logic. Here, a committed vision of wine is cultivated, far from standards and prefabricated formulas.
The Cuvées of Château Lafitte
The cuvées of Château Lafitte are designed to reflect the richness of the Béarn terroir and the deliberate choices of an unadulterated production method. The grapes—primarily Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, and Sauvignon—are hand-harvested, vinified without oenological additives, without added sulfur, and often without filtration. Some cuvées are aged in amphorae or stoneware jars, others in barrels or tanks, depending on the wine's energy and Antoine Arraou's choices. The estate also works on skin macerations for the whites, always with great finesse. Wines like Argile, Funambule, Sol i Serena, or La Coulée Douce offer honest, vibrant expressions, outside the norms, yet deeply connected to their place of origin. These are cuvées that align with the natural wine movement, showcasing true technical mastery and a clear vision of what a living wine from the South West can be.
