Biodynamic wine: what are we talking about?
When we talk about biodynamics, we refer to a method used by winemakers, developed and popularized in the 20th century by an Austrian polymath and occultist; Steiner. This viticulture method aims to protect the vines in the cleanest way possible. Winemakers want to produce healthy wines, so the use of chemical inputs is banned. This very popular method seeks to respect the natural cycles of the earth and to promote ecosystem balance through herbal preparations. Everything is done according to the lunar calendar and planetary rhythms, but also through rituals and energetic practices.
Are all biodynamic wines Demeter certified?
No, not all biodynamic wines have the Demeter certification. Winemakers can use Steiner’s method without using the label, even though it is well-known in the wine world. In fact, the Demeter label is known for its strict regulations, and winemakers who have it must indicate it on the wine label, as is the case with the Domaine Giachino bottles. Another winemaker who strongly uses this method is Jérémy Bricka. Chemical products are banned from his vines, but for more specific details about his wines, the label, the producer, or the Epi-curieux team can provide more information.
What are the other biodynamic wine certifications?
There are other certification bodies for biodynamic wines such as Biodyvin. Biodyvin is an international association that certifies wines in compliance with biodynamic standards and specific criteria. The Château de Bois-Brinçon estate has several labels such as Biodyvin and AB (Organic Farming). We can also mention Nature et Progrès, a French association. Nature et Progrès certifies that biodynamic wines are made using environmentally friendly production methods.
